At the end of the local train line and a short walk through a beautiful tree-lined avenue, Vrelo Bosne awaits with its various springs.
It’s a natural landmark and a favorite amongst locals looking to escape the frantic lifestyle of Sarajevo. The park is a true slice of a peaceful atmosphere and a quiet sanctuary from Bosnia & Herzegovina’s capital city. Despite its relaxing charm, don’t expect it to be a place to just sit and stare at nothing. You’ll see families enjoying picnics, walkers traversing the many pathways, and cyclists cruising along the cement paths. Don’t worry though, it’s still easy to find a tranquil spot amongst the many benches and grassy areas.
If you’re there with kids, there are play sections with mini obstacles and wooden structures. Plenty of rest spots offering cover are provided as well, making it a perfect place for those seeking shaded benches.
Tip | Although the busiest time of the year at Vrelo Bosne is in summer, the park is much cooler than the city. It’s the ideal time to have a visit. Sarajevo gets humid and temperatures between the high buildings rise to uncomfortable levels.
ARRIVING AT VRELO BOSNE
Located at the foot of Mount Igman in the municipality of Ilidza, Vrelo Bosne (maps) has a relaxing and historic feel to it. The buildings on the avenue leading to the park are actually from the Austro-Hungarian period. The architecture is really pretty, with large yards and picturesque villas. You’ll even find horse-drawn carriages around this area that offer transport down the road to the edge of the park. If you’re going to use one, make sure it’s from a driver that treats their horse in a good manner.
At the park, you’ll find loads of swans and fish. There’s also a restaurant in the complex. It’s just along the water, and unsurprisingly, it serves the local specialty – freshwater trout.

The springs here are known for their healing properties. The streams running through the park are part of a wider system that leads into the River Bosna. It’s one of the country’s main internal waterways and the third longest river in Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Fun fact | Ilidza is a place full of history dating back to the Roman Empire. Just a short walk away is the “Roman Bridge”. It was built hundreds of years ago from the stones of the original bridge that connected the Romans with the ancient village of Aquae Sulphurae.
If you are ever in need of a break from the capital city or just need to refresh your mind in between museum visits, Vrelo Bosne is the recommended place!
Entrance | There is an entrance fee to get into the park. It’s a modest 2 KM (just over 1 US dollar) for adults, 1 KM for students and kids, and free for young children.
How to get there?
The best way to get to Vrelo Bosne from Sarajevo is by the Route 3 train toward Ilidža. It runs through the various city center stops and leaves frequently. The line will end in Ilidža, where you’ll need to get off. From there you’ll have to walk east and cross one of the bridges to the other side of the river. Keep walking through Park Banjska until you reach Velika Aleja Street. It’s the previously mentioned street where the carriages are. From there it’s a straight shot to the park.
