Monastery of Saint Naum (Sveti Naum)

Sveti Naum is a picture perfect church complex on the shores of Lake Ohrid. The medieval monastery and its gorgeous surroundings make it a popular tourist destination in North Macedonia.

Almost touching the Albanian borders in North Macedonia, the Monastery of Saint Naum is one of the most visited places in the country. A trip to the beautiful monastery complex is something you won’t want to miss when visiting the neighboring town of Ohrid.

The church, which also goes by the Macedonian name of Sveti Naum, was originally established in the early 900’s by Saint Naum himself. Known for performing miracles, he was laid to rest in a stone coffin inside the monastery.

Sveti Naum can get busy, especially after the boat initially docks.

Inside The Chuch Grounds

Just like the popular Church of Saint John at Kaneo in Ohrid, the building has the same beautiful burnt orange rooftops and domed design. That’s because the current structure was built in the similar Byzantine style. There are quite a few churches in the Balkans with this look, but not many have the spectacular views that Sveti Naum does.

However, the facilities offer more than just a pretty sight. There’s a lush green garden that’s known for its stress reducing vibes and bright feathered peacocks. The small park is a great place to stroll around and take pictures of the curious birds.

You’ll also notice that the main church has some distinctive wood carvings and a renovated interior. The often busy house of prayer stands in the middle of the complex and holds much of the history.

Originally part of the Bulgarian Empire, it’s been through times of learning, captivity and now tourism. Around the 16th century it was used as a Greek school and for a brief period in the 1900’s it belonged to Albania, before being returned.

THE BEACH AND SURROUNDINGS OF SVETI NAUM

The ultra clear spring waters just outside the church complex.

There’s so much more to the area than just the monastery and its facilities. The surrounding area is highlighted by other small churches, natural springs, and a magnificent rock beach. There are also plenty of places to eat, and a line of souvenir shops selling different crafted items.

At Crn Drim, or Black Drim’s Springs, you’ll find clear, exotic looking waters that lead out to the sea. With shady trees and relaxing restaurants lining the mini river, it’s a perfect place to enjoy lunch and hide from the overbearing sun. When you’re done, you can hop on one of the many row boats that glide on top of the still surface.

Just outside Sveti Naum and opposite Crn Drim is the stunning St. Naum beach. Its rocks appear colorful in the shallows of Lake Ohrid and the gushing waters from the springs keep it cool and refreshing. Lounging around the beach is a perfect way to waste a couple hours before heading back to Ohrid.

How to get the Monastery of Saint Naum?

By Boat | The best way to get to the Monastery of Saint Naum is by boat cruise. There’s a large boat that leaves daily and stays docked at the complex for a few hours (which is plenty of time). The cost is 10 euros and it’s an amazing way to see Lake Ohrid. If you’re lucky, it will stop at the super unique Bay of Bones!

You can also hop on a boat taxi or private pontoon boat. However, these options tend to cost a bit extra.

The boat cruise is a wonderful way to see Lake Ohrid's natural beauty.

By Car | You can also visit Sveti Naum by car or taxi. There used to be a bus option, but it wasn’t running while I was there. It wouldn’t hurt to ask your hotel/hostel just in case though. The road that leads there is the P1301/P501 towards Albania.

If you are staying in Pogradec in Albania, you can also make a day trip to the church. But make sure you get a taxi that can cross the borders, or you might end up with a lengthy walk back.

There are so many wonderful things you can do around the marvelous Lake Ohrid. Make sure that a day trip to the Monastery of Saint Naum is one of them!
